School Bus Hits, Kills Wyoming Motorcyclist

A bus carrying football players from Evanston High School crashed into a dirt bike two miles south of Afton on US 89. The rider, Troy L. Turner, died from his injuries. The 36-year-old was riding without lights, and the bus driver did not see him. Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) officers were looking for the rider after receiving reports of bikers riding around downtown Afton without headlights. They received word of the accident about 11 minutes after that report. The bus driver, who was taking the students home after a football game, crashed into the biker from the rear, pinning the bike underneath the bus. The rider was thrown forward into a barrow pit. He died from his injuries at the accident scene. The other biker did not sustain injuries. Motorcyclist Dies in Yellowstone Accident

James Michael Cody, 52, was motorcycling with two other bikers through Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming between Madison Junction and the Gibbon Falls overlook. According to the Yellowstone public affairs office, a sports utility vehicle drifted across the center lane towards the bikers. Cody, leading the group, had no time to react. He hit the SUV head-on. Authorities later pronounced the Wyoming native dead at the scene. The other two bikers managed to avoid hitting the SUV. Paramedics treated them for minor injuries. Officials are still investigating the motorcycle crash, but park officials indicated that the SUV driver might have been asleep when he or she crossed the centerline. Riding through Wyoming is a beautiful and rewarding experience, especially in the Yellowstane region. 2012 Could Be Deadliest Year for Nebraska Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle accidents in Nebraska have increased by 71 percent from 2011, according to Rose White, spokesperson for AAA-Nebraska. “With 12 motorcycle deaths reported so far this year, the first half of 2012 has proven to be one of the deadliest years on record for bikers in Nebraska,” White said. “At this same time a year ago, there were only seven motorcycle fatalities.” In 2011, there were 23 total motorcycle fatalities in Nebraska. Reducing Accidents To help reduce motorcycle deaths, Rose offered some tips on behalf of AAA: Look twice. Look around for motorcycle before making a turn. If you see one, chances are there could be another one close by since motorcycles tend to travel in groups or pairs. Take a refresher course. New riders are encouraged to enroll in a motorcycle training course, even though Nebraska does not require an education certificate to ride a motorcycle. Experienced riders should…
