Three people died within the first 12 hours of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which took place in Sturgis, SD. between Aug. 6 and Aug. 12. One of the first casualties was a biker from Colorado, whose name has not been released.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s office, the biker lost control on a sharp turn about four miles west of Lead. His passenger was transported to a nearby hospital. The accident, along with several motorcycle accidents that occurred during the rally, is under investigation.

Major Factors

Police have not released any other factors about the accident, but officials said prior to the rally that speed and alcohol were primary concerns, especially considering the South Dakota landscape.

“When you come to western South Dakota, you have roads that curve and ditches that drop off or a steep embankment,” Patrol Lt. Rick Miller said in an interview with the Rapid City Journal. “A lot of nice bikes are around, the scenery is nice. When you’re driving with everyone around you, you’ve got to be careful and pay attention to what’s going on.”

Nine people died at the rally this year. Over the last 14 years, an average 6.5 people died each year.
