Businesses Increasing Entertainment for Upcoming Biker Rally In Myrtle Beach

Businesses are preparing for an upcoming motorcycle rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Spring Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson “Cruisin’ the Coast” rally is adding more entertainment in hopes to attract more visitors to the area. The festival will start on May 10 and run through May 19. This year will include a 90-mile bike ride across the grand strand. Because of the projected increase in revenue, many businesses are excited about the upcoming rally. But not everyone is excited about the increase in motorcycle traffic. Many residents and other businesses are not looking forward to the noise and rowdiness the large crowd brings. Myrtle Beach used to be one of the most popular rally points for the spring bike weeks, but it has not hosted a rally in years. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Being aware of other drivers on the road should always be one of the top priorities for any motorist, but fatal motorcycle accidents have been on the rise sense the 1980s. Because of this rise, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has deemed May, National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Multiple states have taken measures to increase motorcycle awareness by posting motorcycle messages via posters, billboards, and radio and TV commercials. The messages call for motorists to be aware of all vehicles around them, especially motorcycles, and to drive in a defensive manner. Some tips issued from the NHTSA for drivers were to give motorcyclists a full lane, stay behind a motorcycle by 3 or 4 seconds, and to remain alert and double check for motorcycles, especially before making a left hand turn. TxDOT Releases Report Showing A Decrease In Motorcycle Fatalities For 2012

A report from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) indicates that fatal motorcycle accidents decreased by 6 percent in 2012 in the Lone Star State, as opposed to a projected national increase. The agency reported that 460 people were killed on motorcycles in 2012, while 488 were killed in 2011. Mark Cross, a TxDOT spokesman, said the agency has no explanation as to why there is a decrease in accidents in Texas, but said it is welcomed news. The major causes of the accidents in Texas were due to motorists being unaware of the motorcycles on the road. Texas A&M University confirmed this with research done by their transportation Institute. They found that more than half the crashes involving a motorcycle were caused by another driver’s failure to see the bike.
